Health Notice

Pertussis (also called whooping cough) has been reported among students in our schools and in our community.

Pertussis can be a serious bacterial illness. Pertussis may begin with a runny nose, sneezing, mild cough, and possibly a low grade fever. After 1 or 2 weeks, the cough worsens and begins to occur in sudden, uncontrollable bursts. These coughing attacks can end in vomiting and/or in a high-pitched whooping noise. Coughing attacks often happen at night. Older children and adults may have a less typical cough. The cough can continue for up to 3 months.

Persons with pertussis should not go to school, work, or any activities until they have finished 5 days of antibiotic treatment, unless the person has already been coughing for 3 or more weeks. Although the cough can last longer than 3 weeks, a person is no longer contagious after the third week.

The disease can be less severe in adults and older children and when not recognized and treated, can be easily passed on to infants, who may become very ill. However, deaths from pertussis are rare.

Most children have been vaccinated for pertussis, however, protection decreases over time. Studies have shown that the immunity from the vaccine decreases after 3-5 years from the last vaccination, which is usually given before kindergarten. Therefore, most adolescents and adults are at risk for pertussis. A pertussis booster vaccine for adolescents and adults is now available and is given with the tetanus-diphtheria booster. Parents of children 10 years and older and adults (especially those with infants less than 12 months of age in their home) should talk to their healthcare provider about Tdap.

If you or your child has a cough and has had contact with someone with pertussis or has been coughing for 7 days or longer, discuss pertussis with your healthcare provider. Questions from you or your healthcare provider can be directed to LoAnn DeGagne', RN/LSN, ISD #47 District Nurse at 258-1731.

Persuasive Writing - Information to Consider

1 You want an Xbox, a computer, a raise in your allowance, or permission to attend a concert with your friends. What do you do? You might try whining, wheedling, or begging, but that conduct rarely does more than annoy people. You might employ tantrums, threats, or sarcasm, but that sorry behavior won't win you any awards either. If you use the art of persuasion, you stand the best chance of being heard, respected, and perhaps rewarded with the desired response. Surely by this stage of life you have already picked up on the persuasive argument.

2 Let's take what you know about the art of persuasion and apply it to the written word. Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay. We'll take it step-by-step.

3 First you need to choose a topic. It must be something debatable. It can't be a fact. If you were to choose as your topic, "Vipers are dangerous," you wouldn't have to persuade anyone of that. However, if your topic was, "Vipers should be eliminated from the animal kingdom," then you would have presented an opinion that could be debated. That's not to say that your argument would win, but you could give it your best effort!

4 Your persuasive essay will focus on only one side–your chosen side–of the argument. This will not be a pros-and-cons essay. Also, it won't be a personal opinion essay. You must be prepared to back up your logic with evidence collected in research that supports your position.

5 Students often choose topics such as school uniforms, the legal driving age, or saving endangered animals. I'd like you to move past those topics to something new and creative. Try one of these three topics: Christmas trees, Survivor, or our national bird. You need to decide your position on the chosen topic. Your argument regarding Christmas trees may be to persuade others to buy artificial trees, or persuade them that live trees are best, or perhaps you feel that the tradition of Christmas trees has no place in the 21st century! Your argument regarding the TV program, Survivor, would be about whether teens should or should not participate. If you choose our national bird as your topic, you should try to persuade your readers that a bird other than the Bald Eagle deserves to be the United States' bird of honor. Choose one of those topics listed, or come up with an argument that excites you.

6 Once you have a topic and have researched it thoroughly, you will write your introduction. Capture the reader's attention with a quotation or story related to the topic, or ask a leading question. If I were writing about eliminating vipers, I might begin with the sad tale of a villager whom an eyelash viper hidden in a bunch of bananas killed, and how his death affected his family.

7 After the attention-commanding ploy, you move directly to your argument. In the viper argument, I'd probably give a statistic about deaths per year caused by vipers, and my next sentence would clearly announce my opinion that vipers serve no useful purpose and should be exterminated. Follow your statement of persuasion with three main points that support your position on your topic. You will elaborate on those points in the following paragraphs.

8 The body of your essay will be made up of three paragraphs. Each paragraph will present one argument–or point–for your position, based on the three points you gave in your introduction. Now is the time to expand your argument with facts, quotes, statistics, examples, or other evidence that supports your cause. Choose only the most powerful items that will convince the reader that your idea is the right one.

9 To continue the viper essay, my reasons for reducing the viper population might be that vipers are poisonous, too-well-camouflaged, and serve no useful purpose to humanity. I would present evidence about their toxic nature and ability to hide themselves. The teacher would probably deduct points for that third argument, because I couldn't find evidence to support that opinion. On the contrary, with very little trouble I could have found evidence that shows a very useful purpose for vipers, such as controlling the prey and predator populations and controlling the population of destructive rodents and other pests. These rodents not only destroy crops and food stores but also spread disease that could result in plagues and other health threats to humans. If I were still determined to persuade readers that vipers need to be wiped off the face of the earth, I'd need to come up with a new argument. I'd also try to disprove the opposing argument that states that vipers help control the pest population, since I know that someone might raise that issue. Just as I need to be prepared to defend my position, you'll need to be prepared to defend yours!

10 Completing the essay is simple. In the closing paragraph, you restate your position and summarize your best evidence. At this point, you cannot slip in any new information. This paragraph mainly reviews what you've already written. Don't use the exact same words as in your first paragraph; that shows laziness. This is your last chance to persuade the reader to agree with you! Choose your words carefully! You may add an emotional appeal to your otherwise logical arguments.

11 My viper viewpoint is weak, so my closing would probably include an emotional appeal. "We must protect future generations from the dangers of vipers! We must make this land safe for our children and grandchildren!"

12 It's time for you to begin your persuasive essay. Here is a brief summary to guide you. Once you are finished, you may find that your powers of persuasion have blossomed!

I. Introduction - capture the reader's attention; state your purpose; list three points/arguments supporting your position.

II. Body
A. First paragraph, first point, supporting evidence
B. Second paragraph, second point, supporting evidence
C. Third paragraph, third point, supporting evidence

III. (Optional) Address opposing viewpoints

IV. Conclusion - restate your position and the three points in a different way; insert an emotional appeal if possible; urge the reader to agree with your opinion.

Success!!!

Homework Tonight

Many students are finishing up there AR goals and getting close to completing their RC...way to go!
Today, we went over the Logic Problem and the students should begin creating their own. They were
asked to take home their example to refer to it when they are creating their own. The directions included
having at least 16 cells, three clues, a title, and their name on it. We created a spreadsheet in the computer lab today and saved it to their document folders. When the students have gotten their sloppy copy approved, they may type their information in to the spreadsheet. Enjoy!

Glad to be back!!!! Feeling much better, but not 100%! So glad to be on the mend! Thank you for your concerns, cares, and well wishing! !

Correction from Mrs. E. on the Swimming Permission Form - Keep Reading!

Please use this updated swimming permission slip instead of the one I sent last week. Also, grades 2 and 3 will be playing Dance Dance Revolution in the gym with Mr. Swenson for their AR party instead of a movie (the dates and times have not been set yet).

Deanna Euteneuer
Pleasantview Elementary

The correction is the date...it's Friday, December 17th... not Wednesday

The end of first trimester is quickly approaching and we are very excited about our Accelerated Reader reward party! We plan to take all of the fourth and fifth graders (who reach their goal) swimming at the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School pool on Friday, Dec. 17th. There will be lifeguards on duty and we will only have one grade level in the pool at a time. In order for your child to attend this event they must reach the goal set by their teacher. Students who do not reach their goal will stay at Pleasantview and work.

In order to bus your child to the high school and take them swimming we will need you to sign this permission slip and return it by Dec 15th.

Veteran's Day Essays

Why We Honor Veterans

By: Reid

Veterans are very important because they fought for our freedom. Freedom to me means having the right to choose where we live and how we live. It also means I can choose my friends, and do things that I like to do. Freedom of choice is something that we may not of had if the Veterans did not fight for us.
Each Veteran made many sacrifices. Some of the sacrifices were not seeing their friends and family, not being able to be at home where they have a nice comfy bed to sleep in, and food on the table. These are things that we seem to take for granted every day. The biggest sacrifice that some of the veterans made was giving up their lives for us.
The original name of Veteran’s Day was Armistice Day. That name had been given by President Wilson on November 11, 1918. That was the day that one of the most destructive wars had come to an end. Peace and freedom was approaching.
Veterans should be remembered and honored for what they have given us: OUR FREEDOM!

Why We Honor Veteran’s Day
By: RaeAnn

Veterans day is import because if we didn’t have been living somewhere with no mom and no dad. Also you may been have been living in sunless days. It would be terrible . Veterans are great!
Veterans day became a legal holiday on May 13,1938. Soldiers of the 353rd Infantry close to a church at Stenay, Meuse in France, wait for the end hostilities . In November,1919,president Wilson made November 11 the first anniversary veterans day. The reason to celebrate Veteran's day is to honor Veterans.
The sacrifices they make are serious. They also give up going to the grocery store,Mc Donald's and man other things. Veterans give up a lot of stuff. Veterans give up a lot of stuff for us.
I think that Veteran’s day is important because Veteran’s give up things, especially their family time. Their family is also giving up a family member because they know they will fight for our freedom. It is so sad!
If mom, dad, or one of my family members went to war, I would be terrified. I would not know if they were dead or alive. Okay or not! Tt would be so scary. I would often cry.
Veterans are forever honored!

Why We Honor Veterans

By Noah Jurek

Veteran’s Day is so important because they fought
for us. Veteran’s Day should mean a lot to you because
if it wasn't for them we would not be doing or having
stuff we need most.
Veteran’s Day is about people who died for us and
fought for our country to be free. A lot of people died for
us and they missed out on a lot of fun things.
Veterans gave us freedom and they still do. The sad
part is that they died for us and all of our lives. I think that
Veteran’s Day should be a good way for us to remember the
people who fought for us.
I feel Veterans should be honored from now on.

Why We Honor Veterans
By: Kathryn

Veterans are very important people. They fought so we could be free. They didn’t have to, but they cared so much they did.
In 1953, a man named Alfred King had the idea to expand Veterans Day to celebrate all Veterans, not just those who served in World War II. The U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson, first proclaimed Veterans Day for November 11,1919. In 1938, they changed the words “Armistice Day’’ to “Veterans Day’’.
Veterans risked their lives for our country. they put aside time with their families too to fight, and help the wounded.
My Great-Grandfather is a Veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific, and he fought the Japanese. I’m glad he helped out.
I appreciate what they did for us. Think about how the world would be without Veterans.Veterans are very caring people.
We should be forever grateful because of what they did to help us. they should be forever honored.

Why We Honor Veterans

By: Cullen

Veterans Day is about when people from our country fought for our freedom. If we did not have veterans we probably wouldn’t be here right now. Veterans bring other people from other countries to the United States because it’s not safe in their own country. We honor veterans for what they all do.
World war 1 was known as “ The great war “. The agreement was signed on the 11 hour,11 day and the 11 month. Later in the year on October 8,Dwight Eisenhower signed hr7786, changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
The sacrifices veterans make are huge. They give up everything. Most of them probably haven’t seen their families in 2 years. They give up their life so we can be free in our country.
If you know someone who has been in the military you should ask them about their experiences. They have probably told you about it. I’m sure you have not seen them in a long time. I know you missed them a lot.
A good way to thank them is if you see someone in a military uniform you should go up to them and say thank you. Even if you don’t know them,Im sure they would like that. You should thank veterans for what they all do. Veterans Day will be forever honored.

Why Do We Honor Veterans Day?
By Braden

Veterans Day is a day of honor. It’s a day of honor for the veterans. I think should celebrate because they spend 365 days for us we should spend at least one day for them. That’s why I think we should honor it. Veterans Day was approved on May 13, 1938. Then every November 11 is Veterans Day. It used to be called Armistice Day. Veterans Day is a great holiday.
Veterans give up a lot of things. They can’t go out to eat and have hamburger. They also have a comfy bed. So veterans give up a lot of things just for us.
We should always honor Veterans Day because they spend 365 days and we should spend at least one day for them.

Why We Honor Veterans!

By: Bailey

Every day we should honor those who sacrifice their lives to save us from those who want to hurt us.
Veteran's Day is mostly celebrated in the United States. Veteran's Day use to be called Armistice Day. The signing of the Armistice ended World War 1. On May 24, 1954, November 11 officially became Veteran's Day. This day is set aside in honor of all those people who fought in defense of the United States.
On Veteran's Day Americans honor everyone that is a Military Veteran. They also include the very many working moms that are also Veterans of the Military Service. 1.8 million female Veterans are more likely to work full-time. Veteran's Day is always celebrated on November 11 with parades and speeches.
Veterans gave their lives completely and solely to defend this nation in the event of the war. Many of the people in the war got hurt, shot, or even, killed. They sacrificed themselves to keep us safe. They fought all day and all night to make our country safe and free.
There are many ways that the Veterans have kept us safe and defended us from our enemies.
Veterans Day should be remembered and forever honored.

Another 4th Grade Example of a Veteran's Day Essay... Nice Job!

What Veteran’s Day Means To Me
By : Abby

When you think of holidays do think of no school

or getting candy or presents well you are probably

thinking of a lot of holidays , but you’re not thinking

about Veteran’s Day. This holiday isn’t about getting

stuff. It’s about honoring and giving thanks to people

that sacrifice their time and their lives to keep our country

safe.

My cousin Nathan was a member of the Red Bulls,

which was the longest serving national guard troop in

the Iraq war. One group that was very important was the

group that went to Vietnam and Korea like my friends

Joe Warnet and Ralph Spoden . A lot of young

men where chosen by the draft . The draft was created

by the U.S. Goverment, it meant young males didn’t have a

choice whether or not to go to war and neither did their

parents.

A way to say thank you is if you see a Soldier

in uniform say “thank you”. Or if you are at any veteran’s

ceremony be respectful.

I wouldn’t know how it would feel if I didn’t have the

stuff that I do every day. For example, transportation to

place to place ,a chance to choose our jobs , or for some

girls to go to school and get a good education like

myself. So, to all the people that sacrifice so much for us

I give you thanks.

Veteran's Day Information

THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY
OVERVIEW OF VETERANS DAY

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is the anniversary of the ending of World War I. In the United States it is celebrated as a federal holiday on November 11. Veterans Day has been observed annually on this date since 1978, except for a brief period when it was celebrated on the fourth Monday of October.

HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY

Following World War II, the name of the holiday was changed (enacted June 1, 1954) to Veterans Day to honor those who died in all American wars. The day has since evolved to primarily be a time of honoring living veterans who have served in the military during wartime or peacetime, partially due to competition with Memorial Day, which primarily honors the dead.

Many nations within the British Commonwealth observe a similar occasion on November 11, Remembrance Day.

Why Should We Honor Veterans?
Lexie

“Nooo!” “Bam!” “Boom!” The moans of the dying and shrieks of snipers pollutes the air. Thousands, nay, millions have given up their lives, or perhaps their families, houses, and sometimes their sanity. We, as a country, have those men & women to thank for the free country we live in today.

So very many people have given up everything. They don’t have their comfy, soft beds from Sleepy’s® the privilege of being able to get up in the night to check on their sleeping newborn, or go & stop at McDonalds on the way home from work. These people are so selfless that they would willingly give up their lives in order for the rest of the USA to live our lives.

Vietnam, WW II, the Civil War, etc. If we didn’t have men & women willing to sacrifice their lives for us, where would our country, maybe even the rest of the world, be today? WW I, the Revolutionary War, Iraq. All of these have been terrible, bloody & devastating. All the people who have died in these deserve to be mentioned. Their lives, family, sanity. Shouldn’t we give one day, ONE day out of 365 to them? A day honoring them isn’t much compared to the crippling pain – physical, mental, or both – that all these millions of men & women went through?

Why should we honor veterans on Veterans’ Day? Perhaps the fact that we owe our lives to them will convince you.

Veterans Essay
Kim

When asked, “Should we honor veterans?” the only answer that comes to mind is, YES. When asked, “Why should we honor them?” the answer is because these men and women risked and still are risking their lives for their country and its people. We should honor them because of their bravery, their self-sacrifice, and for protecting us. They fight in wars, help after disasters, and do so much for their country; we cannot just let that slide. We should thank them. Thank them for all they have done, to help better our lives, to preserve our freedoms, and keep our homes safe. Veterans are heroes, and they should be treated as such. I remember a saying, “treat others how you wish to be treated” and I think we should treat the veterans how we would want to be treated if we were them. So, that is why, to me, respecting and honoring them is the right thing to do. Over this past summer, my family and I went to Washington D.C. and we saw all the different memorials. All the statues, carvings in marble, fountains, and people there, reading the names, looking for the names of loved ones. It was nice to see what had been done in memory of the wars and the people who had fought and died in them. It was also sad that so many people had died. Millions of people had risked and gave their lives fighting for their country, and millions still do. All these millions of people, veterans, are honored as heroes of the past who helped make and keep safe where we are today. I’m truly grateful for all the past and present, and even future veterans for what they’ve done, what they do, and what they will do; to be called veterans is a tribute to what deeds they did in the name of their country, to save and protect it. Veterans are really heroes, and November 11th is a well-deserved holiday, let’s all celebrate and remember all veterans. They should always be honored and remembered.

“Why Should We Honor Veterans?”
Cora

“Extra, extra! Read all about it! Seventeen killed and fifteen wounded in a street bombing!” Everyday we hear stories similar to this on the news. Who are these people? They are veterans of war.

Every day as Americans, we take for granted rights that were given to us; rights that veterans have fought for. How brave and unselfish are those who risk their lives to keep millions of others free? I know I would not be able to commit to such an honorable act. These veterans lose their lives for me, for you, and for everyone in this room. On top of all that, they do it willingly.

Many veterans left the country for months or years at a time to fight. Most were only able to communicate to family members through letters. Some veterans couldn’t even tell their families where they were stationed. Can you imagine that? What if you couldn’t see your mom, dad, son or daughter and not know if they were ok?

Veterans of war often have a price to pay. Whether it be a scar or a lost arm, it is something they have to live with for the rest of their lives. However, they are the ones who brought honor and peace to this country.

America has a lot to be thankful for. These veterans have fought tirelessly to ‘let freedom ring.’ They have risked their lives for you and for me which is more than I’ll ever be able to do. They left their homes; their families to go abroad and fight. These veterans have risked so much for our country. The absolute least we could do is give them the honor and gratification they deserve. For these reasons and many more, our veterans should forever be honored.
