Congratulations!!!

Congratulations on completing your first week of fourth grade!  It was a busy week organizing materials, learning new routines, building new relationships, and reviewing school rules and procedures.  I definitely appreciated the students responsible and respectful behavior. Listed below are a few of the task that we completed this week.  Please review each one with your child and if you find yourself unsure of an of them, please send me an e-mail with your questions.

We completed our agenda and took it home each night to have our parents sign and  it.
We completed our first math assignment and returned it signed by a parent
We checked out a library book and begin reading 20 minutes per night.
We  completed our daily morning routine in our September notebook and checked to make sure all responses were accurate.
We sent all required signed school forms to the office. This included payment for juice and snack which begins on Monday, September 9.
We discussed and read a book about  P.A.T.H. expectations.  We agreed to demonstrate Personal Best behaviors, be Accountable for our actions, increase our success with  Teamwork, and be Honest in all our actions throughout the year!

Again, thank you for an enjoyable and successful first week of school.  If you have any questions, please e-mail me at david.krupa@isd47.org

Growing Healthy Video

May 10, 2013

Dear Families,

Spring is a time of year when there are many changes in nature.  The fourth grade teachers use this natural opportunity to tie into the physical changes in people.  On Friday, May 24th each classroom will separate their students into groups of boys and girls to show a video and hold a discussion on the changes the students can expect to go through as they mature.

The videos have been approved by the district curriculum committee and the school board.  They are considered to be appropriate for fourth graders.  If you are interested in viewing the film, it will be available for you to preview on May 16th and 22nd from 2:20 to 3:00. If interested, please confirm your date with your child's teacher.

Sincerely,
The Fourth Grade Staff

Rox Reading

Pleasantview will be participating in the Rox Reading Program again this year.  The program will begin on Monday, April 15 and continue through Sunday, May 12.  The Rox Reading Calendar will take the place of our regular reading log for the next four weeks.  Students and parents will keep track and record their student's reading time on the weekly calendars.  Students are still required to get a minimum of 120 minutes each week.  If their calendar is turned in each week, they will qualify for the weekly drawing to win prizes of Rox merchandise and the grand prize.  One prize will be given out per week per classroom. At the end of 4 weeks, ALL students who reached their reading goal for all 4 weeks will earn the grand prize of a free ticket to a St. Cloud Rox home game!

April 22 and 23 - MCA TESTING FOR OUR CLASS

Here are some tips for helping prepare your child for MCA testing:

Early to bed - A good night’s sleep is very important the night before the test. Most children need at least 10 hours of sleep to perform their best.

Prepare a good breakfast - Test morning is not the time for a high-sugar snack or no breakfast at all. A nutritious and filling breakfast is a must.

Take it seriously - Schools use this information to identify students’ strengths and areas of growth, so encourage your child to do their best.

Relax - Try not to be nervous before the test. Take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes for a moment and tell yourself to just stay calm and focused.

Listen Up - Pay close attention to the teacher’s instructions and carefully read the test instructions to make sure you understand exactly what you’re supposed to do.

Move on/don’t get stuck - If you’re having a hard time with one question, leave it and go on to other questions. Come back to finish it later.

Instill Confidence- Tell your child that s/he is ready and that they will do well.  We have to believe it—to achieve it!

Send out on a Positive Note- Studies have shown that students who have a stress-free morning—do better on the test.

News from the Office

Our Walk for Life committee met last night and we have decided on the following things to promote this event in our building.

Committe members are:  Juli Scott, Kay Pakkala, Jill Zimpel, Carissa Solarz, Jana Johnson, Jennifer Widman, Dave Krupa, Heidi Lund, Katie Brewster, Kim Norsten, Amy Hopper, Jessica Teske, Lindsey Saurer and myself.   If you have questions about any of the events please touch base with one of these members.

Obviously we are continuing with the bottle campaign as in past years.   Thanks again for everyone's help in this project.   Every student who brings back their bottle with any amount in it will have their name go in a drawing for a classroom prize.  Classroom teachers please keep track of who brings their bottles back.

We are asking that each classroom make a poster for their classroom to be dispalyed on the track on May 3rd.  This poster should include the names of those you are walking for and your classroom name.   We will bring around the poster paper to your classroom.   This poster needs to be completed by May 1st.

We have also decided to create a bulletin board in the hallway where students and staff can place a picture of those friends and family members who have battled cancer.  These pictures need to have the students name and teacher name on the back of the picture so that we can return the pictures to them when we are done.  These pictures can be given to either Kay Pakkala or Jill Zimpel who will be creating the bulliten board.

We will also be having three special fridays where students can bring $1. and earn a special priviledge.  On April 12th student can bring $1.00 and earn 1 minute of free time for their grade level.  Grade levels will determine when to have this free time.   On Friday, April 19th, they can bring $1.00 and wear a hat for the day.  On Thursday(no school on Friday), April 25, they can bring $1.00 and get a bag of popcorn.

Starting on April 22nd we will once again have items for sale in the school store through Thursday, May 2nd.    Dave Krupa and Heidi Lund will be organizing this with the fourth grade students.  We will have more information on WAEL at a later time.

We will be walking on Friday, May 3rd.  A schedule will be coming out at a later date for this.  We will once again be handing out Freezees as a treat at this event.  Each grade level will be assigned a color or colors to weat on this day representing a different kind of cancer. We also hope to have the radio station participate with us again on this day.  If we have bad weather we will host the event in the gym.

Thank you to everyone for making this a successful event.

Grammar:  In place of grammar, we will be taking some time to start some preparations for MCA testing.  We will be doing short activities that go over all of the skills we have been practicing all year so far.

Reading:  Our main reading skills for the week will be looking at text and graphic features in non-fiction stories.  We will also be working on recognizing different prefixes and clarifying our understanding.  New reading logs went home today and will be due next Thursday due to no school on Friday.  All reading routines/homework/AR goals etc will remain the same when Ms. Sauerer is here.

Next Week

  • Math:  We are finishing up Unit 8 on Monday and will take the Unit 8 Math Test on Tuesday.  Wednesday, we will begin the next unit - fractions
  • Grammar/Writing:  We will continue to look at different types of poetry and work on our individual poetry books.  In grammar we will be learning comparative and superlative adjectives.

  • Reading:  Our main reading skills for the week are theme, summarizing and practicing multiple meaning words.  We will be having our AR reward party for second trimester on Thursday.  All students who made their goal will get a choice of movie to watch and a special treat.  Board games may also be brought from home if they wish.  We will write reminders for this into agendas next week for those attending.

  • We had MANY students with late reading work this week.  Reading logs were due today as well as AR goals with parent signatures.  Now that we are in third trimester, I will not be accepting late reading logs unless they are absent.  All 4th graders must be practicing reading at home at least 5 days a week and doing a reading log activity each of those days.  Filling in logs at the last minute or only reading one day a week will not be accepted.  Please check with your child if they handed these things in today.
