Next Week

Math - We continue to work with fractions; finding equivalent fractions and changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Grammar:  In place of grammar, we will be taking some time to start some preparations for MCA testing.  We will be doing short activities that go over all of the skills we have been practicing all year so far.

Reading:  Our main reading skills for the week will be looking at text and graphic features in non-fiction stories.  We will also be working on recognizing different prefixes and clarifying our understanding.  New reading logs went home today and will be due next Thursday due to no school on Friday.  All reading routines/homework/AR goals etc will remain the same when Ms. Sauerer is here.

A wonderful website to enjoy - Interactive practice!!!

The walk for life is only about 6 weeks away.  We will begin our bottle campaign on April 1st.  Please have you class collect bottles for this by March 31st.  You will need one per students.   We will once again have information and labels for these bottles when they go home.

I have a supply in storage and I will divide up to everyone to get you started.

Please ask your students to bring a wide moth bottle such as gatorade or some of the different kinds of water or juices.  Anything that a Quarter can fit through.

Please make sure that the bottles are washed, dried, and have had the labels removed.

Thank you!

Next Week

  • Math:  We are finishing up Unit 8 on Monday and will take the Unit 8 Math Test on Tuesday.  Wednesday, we will begin the next unit - fractions
  • Grammar/Writing:  We will continue to look at different types of poetry and work on our individual poetry books.  In grammar we will be learning comparative and superlative adjectives.

  • Reading:  Our main reading skills for the week are theme, summarizing and practicing multiple meaning words.  We will be having our AR reward party for second trimester on Thursday.  All students who made their goal will get a choice of movie to watch and a special treat.  Board games may also be brought from home if they wish.  We will write reminders for this into agendas next week for those attending.

  • We had MANY students with late reading work this week.  Reading logs were due today as well as AR goals with parent signatures.  Now that we are in third trimester, I will not be accepting late reading logs unless they are absent.  All 4th graders must be practicing reading at home at least 5 days a week and doing a reading log activity each of those days.  Filling in logs at the last minute or only reading one day a week will not be accepted.  Please check with your child if they handed these things in today.
  • New reading logs went home today and will be due next Friday.

News From the Office - Class Placement Form for 2012-2013

As parents are talking with you at parent teacher conferences regarding next year's teacher for their students, please remind them  that then need to fill in a Class Placement form in the office.

Homework for Tonight

No math homework tonight
Reading Logs are due on Friday

From the Office of Dr. Bittman,

Technology continues to transform educational practices in our schools, districts, and communities, allowing us to personalize and enhance learning opportunities for our children, while providing access to real-world experiences through learning.  As adults, we do not need to look far to see our children and grandchildren utilize technology to access the Internet, create presentations, and to work collaboratively with other children throughout the state, country and world.  In fact, I recently witnessed elementary children using Skype, a free software application that enables voice and video phone calls over the Internet.  Children were completing a project collaboratively with students in various countries, learning about other cultures, and identifying ways to partner in the future.

While Sauk Rapids-Rice has structures in place to plan, train, design, research, and provide direction for technology, funding has limited access and opportunities for our children.  More specifically, Sauk Rapids-Rice has typically allocated a minimal amount of funding for technology ($150,000) each year, which has often been used for infrastructure related expenses such as bandwidth, fiber, network, and switches instead of for updated software, hardware, and/or opportunities for children to access technology.  The Sauk Rapids-Rice School District has applied for and received numerous grants and has worked with Parent/Teacher Organizations throughout each of our schools to fund technology initiatives for our children.  These partnerships have led to increased access, engagement, and achievement throughout the District.  As a father of three children, I see my own children mesmerized by technology.  I still wonder why it is they cannot clean their rooms or do their chores without complaining, but that they will use technology for a reading or math game for long periods of time.

Regardless of the reason, I am thankful for the continued support of our Parent/Teacher Organizations, which have made technology possible for our children.  Their recent financial contributions and desire to provide iPads for elementary-age children will result in more than 200 iPads being distributed throughout Mississippi Heights, Pleasantview, and Rice Elementary by the start of the 2013-14 school year.  In return, the School District will work collaboratively with staff to provide training and support to ensure our children's academic and technological needs are met. We will also reallocate the dollars, which were designated for these purposes to our Early Childhood, Middle and High School to ensure that our programs are aligned and that all children benefit from increased access and opportunity.

If you know parents involved in our PTAs and/or PTACs, please take some time to thank them for their involvement and continued support.  Because of their generosity, our children will have more access and opportunity for personalized learning.

Go Storm!
