Purpose and Improvement Paragraph Tips and Examples

This week, we will be spending some time discovering how to write a quality Purpose and Improvement paragraph. Below are some tips and two examples that we will analyze. Please feel to refer to these as you begin to write your paragraphs.

DISPLAY BOARD INFO.

Here are a few tips on how to write the paragraphs for your display board -

‘Purpose’ paragraph:

The first sentence should say The purpose of my invention is.....

Explain why you chose to invent this item.  Make sure you are very clear and list the reasons why you made this.  This paragraph should be at least 5 sentences, if not more, to make sure you explain what the purpose is of you invention.

‘Improvement to quality of life’ paragraph:

The first sentence should say My (name of invention) will improve the quality of life by.....

The rest of the sentences should include specific examples of how it makes peoples’ lives better and easier.  This paragraph should be at least 5 sentences long, if not more, to make sure you include how it improves the quality of life of all types of people.

‘How it works’ paragraph:

The first sentence should say My (name of invention) works like this....

Then go on to explain how your invention works and what it does.  Be very descriptive and give details.  Imagine that you are explaining this to a young person  so you will need to be very clear in your description.  This paragraph should be at least 5 sentences, if not more, to thoroughly explain how your invention works.

Examples:

Purpose

The purpose of my (name of invention) is to help babies keep their blanket with them at all times. The two loops in the belt make it easy for babies to keep their favorite blanket and sippy cup with them at all times. As you know, a baby can get very cranky if they don't have their security blanket nearby, so it's important to assist them in keeping this valuable item so close as possible. Also, by keeping the blanket off the floor it helps to prevent germs from getting on the blanket and in the sippy cup. In addition, the ( name of invention) keeps the sippy cup from getting stepped on or tripping someone. Your baby will be happier and healthier with the (name of invention)!

Improvement

My (name of invention) will improve the quality of life by helping a baby stay germ free and become more independent. The (name of invention) will provide the baby with comfort knowing the blanket is close by and within reach. Keeping the blanket off of the ground will keep parents from always having to pick up the blanket for their child. Keeping the blanket off the ground will prevent the spread of germs and will help keep the baby healthy. This will help the family save money as they will not need to visit the doctor's office so often. The holder for the sippy cup will also help prevent the spread of germs by preventing the baby from sharing their sippy cup with others. Every parent needs a (name of invention) and so does every daycare facility. Get yours today!

FYI

This morning our district fiber to the internet, MHES,  PV and Hillside was severed in an accident over by the Middle School. They are fixing the power lines that are now on the ground.  Charter is waiting for the power company to give them the all safe before they can look at the damage to the fiber.  They are hopeful to have the repair completed sometime late tonight.  I am hoping to have our internet and buildings back on line and ready to go in the morning.

Next Week

In Grammar, we will be learning that a singular possessive noun shows ownership by one person or thing and that a plural possessive noun shows ownership by more than one person or thing.  In Science class, we are quickly approaching our first deadline, committing to the Invention Proposal. If you look at the copy of the Invention Parent Packet that your child brought home, you'll notice that the proposal is due on December 17th.  The Invention Proposal form will be sent home on Wednesday, December 12th. Be watching for it!

  • Reading:  The main skills we will be working on in reading this week include fact and opinion, making predictions and using common suffixes to determine the meanings of words.  A new reading log went home today and will be due next Friday.  Please be sure you are also checking your student's AR progress weekly on their tracking sheet in their agendas.  If you have any questions about your child's goal, book choices or reading level please let me know.
  • Math:  We will be finishing Unit 4 this week.  Monday, we will identify attributes, names and perimeter of regular and irregular polygons.  Tuesday, we will work on transformations.  Students will rotate, translate and reflect figures.  Students will be given a homework assignment with time to work on it during class on Monday and Tuesday.  We will spend Wednesday and Thursday reviewing and take the test on Friday.

Parent Permission that will be sent home on Monday

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    December 10, 2012

Dear Parent/ Guardian:

As a culminating activity to the bowling unit in our Physical Education classes, we will be traveling to Sartell Great River Bowling Lanes to bowl from 10:15 - 12:00 on Friday, December 21st.  The cost of this event is $6.00 and parents are welcome to stop by and watch us hone our skills. Please complete this permission slip and return it to your child’s teacher on or before December 19th, so we can have an accurate count of our attendance. Concessions and video games will not be available during this time frame.

Since behavior is a valuable part of a school’s environment and a child’s learning, we will expect that all students will demonstrate appropriate classroom behavior between now (December 10th) and the holiday break.  Any students not following our P.A.T.H. guidelines will not be able to attend the bowling field trip.

In addition, students with missing classroom work will not be attending the December 21st event. We will hold a 45-minute make-up session on December 20th, so students have an opportunity to complete missing assignments. Please encourage your child to complete all tasks in a timely manner. If you would like to help them complete these assignments, please feel free to do so.

Sincerely,

The Fourth Grade Staff

I grant, ____________________________________, permission to attend the Sartell Great River Bowling event on December 21st and have included $6.00 along with this permission slip for my child to attend. I understand that he/she may not be able to attend if his/her behavior is deemed inappropriate prior to or during the event. Also, I understand that he/she may not be able to attend if he/she is missing any classroom work prior to the event.

Next Week

Next week in our grammar class we will begin identifying and using subject and object pronouns, along with placing reflexive pronouns in our sentences.

In our science class, we will begin to look at inventions that have improved our quality of life.  Your child should have brought home the Invention Parent Packet that explains and lists the deadlines we have set for completing a quality project.  If you have not seen the Invention Packet Packet, please discuss this issue with your child.  I have extra packets available for three StarBucks.

  • Math: I will be sending home test scores for Unit 3 on Monday.  In Unit 4, we will be learning about angles and polygons.  This week, our lessons will focus on naming and measuring angles, rotations, symmetry and triangles.  Students will have a homework sheet Monday-Thursday and be given time to work on it during class.  Please continue to work on multiplication and division facts at home.

  • Reading:  The main reading skills we will be focusing on this week include author's purpose, analyzing story structure and fluency intonation.  We will also be practicing analogies.  I did not send a new reading log home for next week due to our busy day.  Please have your student continue to read 20 minutes each night and record their minutes in their agendas.  New reading logs will go home next Friday.

  • On Monday, your child will be starting a new tracking system for reading books and taking AR tests.   All 4th graders will have an ivory colored chart stapled into their agendas.  Please look this over with your child and help them come up with a reasonable yet challenging point goal for the trimester.  I can also help with adjusting/suggesting goals if needed.  I think that this tool will be great for accountability with choosing the right books, finishing and testing on books.  Please check this chart weekly with your child to monitor their progress.
  • Due to the new trimester and MAPS testing this week, we may be doing some adjusting of reading levels for some students.  If a change to your child's good fit level is made, I will record it on their new book logs in their agendas.

PJ Day is on Thursday, too!!!

Don't forget to turn in your Reading Log on Thursday!!!  No school on Friday.

Inventors' Congress Information-Deadlines

The Inventors' Congress Parent Packet was sent home today.  If the students get their parents to sign their agenda stating that they have discussed the packet with their parents, they may earn five StarBucks.  Some of the packet is presented below. Here is a website for purchasing a display board

November 2012

Dear Parents,

We are in the process of preparing for this year’s Inventor’s Congress.  The Inventor’s Congress is scheduled for Friday, January 25th.
We would like to have each student receive support at home in completing a high-quality project for display.  Please feel free to help, support, and encourage your child’s best efforts in putting together a first-rate project.  However, please be careful to let your child do the work him/herself.  Do not do the project for him/her.  Your child will learn more if you limit your involvement to encouraging and guiding.
This assignment is a required unit for our Fourth Grade Science curriculum.  Every student will be expected to complete a project. Each project will be evaluated.
The packet your child has brought home today includes guidelines for completing a project.  Please go through this information and help your child select a project that will be of interest to your child and will be appropriate in terms of level of difficulty and resources (materials, resources, information and space) available.
The final date for turning in an invention plan will be Monday, December 17th.  The invention plan is simply the student writing down the idea they have for their invention.  Since one of the hardest parts of preparing for the Inventor’s Congress is selecting a project, your child may need some assistance from you between now and the due date. We will complete activities to stir your child’s imagination, but we will expect that your child will determine what they will invent. All inventions will be created at home. However, the three required paragraphs may be written and typed at school.

Final Projects are due in school Friday, January 16th- January 24th
Due date is based on sign up sheet
Please read the attached time line and display board example to help your student stay on task.  Thank you for your help and cooperation!

Sincerely,

Fourth Grade Teachers

We Have A New Student!!!

Welcome, Alexis!!!  She'll be starting on Monday!

Crawler Harness

Mason was our first student to purchase a lure making session.  His favorite lake to fish is Leech Lake. His biggest fish he ever caught was a twenty-nine inch northern. In the photo above, he is learning to make the snell knot.  To make his crawler harness, he chose to use a 36 inch leader with 12 pound test flourocarbon line.  While constructing his harness,  he learned about selecting the hooks, hook sizes, and the advantages of colored hooks (he chose a red long shank and a red short shank octopus hook) Tomorrow, he will pick his bead colors, blade, and add the clevis. Tight lines, Mason!

Today, we voted for a new five dollar class StarBuck.  Tomorrow, we'll announce which entry won.

This Week in Class

  • Math:  We will be working on longer subtraction problems and multi-step word problems.  They will be assigned a homework sheet on Monday (3-17) and Tuesday (3-18) and be given time to work on it in class.
  • Reading:  In reading this week we will be practicing writing summaries and making books to hang up in our fourth grade hallway.  There was not a new reading log for this week, but they should still be reading 20 minutes each night.  Students who are missing any reading logs for November can use this week to make one up.  A new reading log will go home on Wednesday and be due Thursday, November 29th.  The main reading skills for next week will be drawing conclusions and making generalizations.  We will be making some changes with AR for second trimester.  Details and a handout will be coming home soon!
Science: We will be continuing our lessons on mass, density, and volume.  In our grammar classes, we will be reviewing fact and opinion, inferences, and complete sentences.
