Next Week

I hope everyone has been enjoying all of this extra snow and MN weather!  It was wonderful getting the chance to meet with all of you at your student's conference.  If you thought of any questions since our time together, please feel free to call or email at any time.  Enjoy your long weekend and here is what next week is looking like..

Grammar/Writing:  In grammar we are working on prepositions and prepositional phrases. We are taking a break from the writing process this week and taking some time focusing on how to make our writing better.  A couple of the activities we will be doing include writing descriptions and using similes.

Reading:  The main skills we will be focusing on this week are understanding characters, asking questions and self-correcting.  Only students who are missing a log from 2nd trimester got one to complete for this week.  The students who have them all turned in get a break, however, they should still be reading 20 minutes a day to keep up with their practice.  There may be a change coming to weekly reading homework... stay tuned for more details!
*There is only 2 weeks left to reach their trimester AR goal!!*

Math:  In math they are continuing to work on division.  The students I see becoming the most frustrated are those who do not have their multiplication facts mastered.  I cannot express enough the importance of knowing these in fourth grade.  Five to ten minutes of practice a night can make a huge difference for your math student.  If you are in need of flashcard resources, please let me know.

Science:  The students are currently having fun learning about magnets and electricity with Mrs. Lund!  Ask them how an electric circuit is made..

Important Dates:

Monday, Feb 18th: No School
Thursday, Feb 21st: Word Masters challenge
Friday, March 1st: Last day of 2nd trimester
Monday, March 4th: No School
Friday, March 8th: PATH Activity Day- more info coming soon!

Have a great week!

Author Visit

Local author and illustrator, John Coy, will be visiting Pleasantview on Tuesday, March 19th.  He is the author of Top of the Order and several other titles.  John creates books that encourage boys to read, and yet the stories appeal to everyone.  The purpose of his visit is to share the process of writing and rewriting a story.  Students in fourth and fifth grade will have an opportunity to listen to him talk about his books.  After his presentation, he will be holding an autograph session.  If you wish to pre-order one of his books, an order form was sent home with your child yesterday.  Please fill out the information on the back of this sheet and return it to school along with payment by Wednesday, February 20.  Make sure to include teacher name, student name, who it should be personalized to and the quantity you would like to order.  Make checks payable to Pleasantview Elementary.

Please visit www.johncoy.com to get complete descriptions of each book.

News From the Office

As parents are talking with you at parent teacher conferences regarding next years teacher for their students, please remind them  that then need to fill in a Class Placement form in the office.

Please keep in mind that we are not looking for specific requests but for the characteristics they are looking for in a teacher.

Also classroom teachers,  please note that if these forms are not filled out there is no way to make sure that they will get the teacher you may have discussed.  Last year we had several parents who said that they had talked with the teacher and were told that they would get a certain teacher the following year but because the paperwork was never completed, we were not aware of these discussions and students were moved.

These forms will be available in the office and are due back by April 1st.

Thank you!

Ellen Fuller

Homework for Tonight

Math 7.5  We completed many practice problems in class...a great day of dividing, as the kids are really beginning to grasp the concept of long division...DMSB!  Your help is REALLY paying off!  Just so you know, I assigned several of the problems on the homework side, as optional.  However, they can complete them for Star Bucks!!!  These optional problems are represented and displayed with a circle around them. Like I said, we spent most of the time practicing problems on the ActiveBoard and  I was so excited to see the active participation, growth, and understanding. Keep up the focused and intense effort!!!

This Week In Writing and Reading - Mrs. Bakke's Room

Reading:  The main comprehension skill for the week is comparing and contrasting.  We will also be working on fluency rate and looking for context clues.  Redaing logs are due on Friday.  I am really seeing a difference in the students who are practicing their reading at home.  They have until March 1st to reach their personal AR goals.
I hope all of you are also enjoying reading Charlotte's Web with your families as part of our One District One Book program!

Writing:  We will be working hard this week on finishing our persuasive essays.  Editing/revising should be finished by tomorrow and then we will be spending a couple of days on final drafts.  We are looking forward to sharing these with you at conferences.

Math: Division, Division, Division!!!

Next Week:  We begin Science with Mrs. Lund

Please bring in your creatively constructed Valentine’s Day cardholder on February 14th. We will be holding a contest for the following categories: -- Most Hearts --- Most Creative --- Most Anti-Valentine --- Most Red, Pink, and Purple --- Most Storm Spirited ---- Most Effort ---- The judging will take place by the students on February 14th.
