Next week
In Grammar class, we will be looking at action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs. In addition, we will practice selecting words that are better suited for describing certain scenes and scenarios. In Social Studies, we will continue using cardinal and intermediate directions to identify locations on an atlas and on a globe. Toward the end of the week, we will take a practice continent and ocean test. The end of the unit test will be given during the following week. Please take a look at your child's Social Studies Conference Checklist form to determine how well they are able to spell the seven continents and four oceans, as spelling will count on the final test.
- Reading: Our main skills to practice this week are comparing and contrasting, reading with expression and making predictions. We will also be working on the -y and -ous suffixes. New reading logs went home today and will be due next THURSDAY (no school Friday). Please take a minute to check your homes for any books that belong to our classrooms. We are missing MANY books from the classroom and would love them back if nobody is reading them. Thank you!
- Math: This week we will work on mixed word problems, place value to thousands and rounding numbers. There has been some improvement in the time test scores. Please continue to practice your math facts nightly.

News From Mrs. Bakke
AR update: There have been many parent questions coming in regarding AR so I thought I would just send out the current updates to everyone. There have been some changes made to the program this year which may take some time as a whole to get used to. The purpose for the Accelerated Reading program is to motivate students to read. Therefore, as a district, it was decided that reward parties should not be given as a reward for something they should be doing to help them become better readers. Due to the fact that there is no reward, at this time grade levels were not given specific point goals that had to be reached. As a grade level, we are deciding how we want to use AR in the future and are tentatively planning on having individual goals 2nd trimester. These will be made based on each student and parents will also get input on their child's goal. For the remainder of first trimester: Students should still be testing after each book they read to monitor their comprehension. Students will only be receiving points for tests in which they receive at least 80%. An update on the quizzes your student has taken so far this year will be stapled into their agendas NEXT WEEK. Please look for these and initial them. As fourth graders, they are responsible for taking the tests themselves and getting their own beads etc. after they are earned. Testing, point updating and other AR related items are to take place before school and during snack time only. No reading time will be used for this. Please let me know if this doesn't answer all of your questions.
Thank you,
Mrs. Bakke
