Growing Health Video - Copy of the letter that was sent home

May 15, 2012
Dear Families,
Spring is a time of year when there are many changes in nature.  The fourth grade teachers use this natural opportunity to tie into the physical changes in people.  On Friday, May 25th each fourth grade classroom will separate their students into groups of boys and girls. We will use this time and this format to show a video and hold a discussion on the changes the students can expect to go through as they mature.
The district curriculum committee and the school board have approved the videos.  The videos focus on the benefits of proper personal hygiene, i.e.; brushing your teeth, washing your body, and getting enough rest.  The videos also mention body functions and what to expect as we develop and mature. Both videos are meant to encourage personal responsibility and the positive effects of making healthy choices.
If you are interested in viewing the girl’s film, it will be available for you to watch in our media center on Monday, May 21st from 2:20 - 3:00 P.M.  If you are interested in reading a script of the boy’s video, contact your child’s teacher and one will be provided for you.  If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
The Fourth Grade Staff

4-5 Field Day Activity Directions

1. Goofy Relays
Divide into 4 equal groups.
a. Kick It Down Set It Up
Each member of the relay team must run down to a bowling pin and kick it over, sit down
and use his/her feet to set it back up, before returning to his/her team.

b. Bean Bag Relay
Place three bean bags in a hoop about 30 feet from each team. On “Go” the first player
runs to the hoop and picks up one bean bag and brings is back and places it in a second
hoop in front of his team. Repeat the same task with bean bags 2 and 3. Now it is the
next players turn. During the second players turn the task is reversed. She takes a bean
bag from the hoop and takes it to the hoop 30 feet away and does the same thing with
bean bag #2 and 3. Race continues until everyone has had a turn.

c. 50 Meter run
Have 8 people run at a time. Divide by boy and girls and/or mixed.

2. Leaky Pipe
a. Divide up into 4 groups
• Groups try to be the first to fill their bucket with water.
• Work together to keep the water from leaking out of the pipe!
• You may get a little wet at this activity!

3. Hurdle Relay
We will be using mini hurdles and cones. You can set the course up how you wish. You can
have them jump over hurdles and weave in and out of cones. You can have them run, skip,
gallop. They can go forwards or backwards or do a crabwalk. Mix it up and have fun.

4. Potato Sack and 3 Legged Relay
a. Potato Sack
You may go boys only and girls or mixed. You can have them go forwards, backwards or
sideways.
b. 3 Legged
They may pick their own partner. They can go forwards, backwards or sideways.

5. Obstacle Course
Divide the students into 4 equal groups
• Demonstrate how to go through the obstacle course.
• You may add your own variations but keep safety in mind.
• Only go under the track hurdles
• There is extra equipment so use your imagination and change things up if you want.

6. High Jump and Standing Long Jump
High Jump
Have students get into two lines. We will be using the stretch cord at the high jump
area. Start at 3 1/2 feet and move up 6 inches at a time.
Standing Long Jump
While the students are waiting in line they may do the standing long jump using the
marked mat.

7. Hula Hoop Relays
Hoop Pass
Can do as one large group or two smaller groups
Players hold hands in a circle.
Place a hoop between two players so that their hands are joined inside the hoop. (Place 3
hoops around circle)The task is for the team is to make the hoop travel around the circle
without anyone letting go of hands.

Lily Pad Race
Give teams of four students three hula hoops (lily pads). One student is the frog and the
other three students are lilly pad movers. The object of the race is to help the frog get
across the pond and back to the start without the frog touching the water (ground)
outside a hoop. On “Go” the students place their lilly pads on the ground in front of their
frog. The frog jumps or hops from one hoop to another until it reaches the other side of
the pond and then returns the same way. Lilly pad movers can be in the water and
continue to move the lilly pads as needed to help their frog. The first team to get all
four players across and back once wins the race. You can also do the race by making
everyone stay inside a hoop.
Exercise Relay
Divide the group into even teams. In front of a single-file line place three hoops at 10,
20 and 30 feet. On “Go” players #1 runs to the first hoop and performs an exercise (5
jumping jacks), at 2nd hoop they perform another exercise(10 mountain climbers) and
then moves to the 3rd hoop to perform the final exercise. After completing the tasks he
runs back to tag the next player who repeats the exercise order.

8. Running Long Jump
We will use 2 running long jump pits. You can divide into boys and girls.
Tape measures will be available to measure their distance.
Make sure you rake pits so a “hole” doesn’t develop.

9. Ball Throw / Ball Kick For Distance

1. Ball Throw / Ball Kick
• Have half the group come up to line with a tennis ball. Divide by boys and girls
• Remind them to look at their number on the ball
• On signal “ready, aim, throw” they will throw the ball for distance.
• Pick the top three throws
• Tell them to wait to retrieve balls until you give them the signal to retrieve.
Variations: Throw with opposite hand
Throw backwards
Throw underhand
Hike it between legs

Dear SRRMS Parents,
?
Tuesday, May 8 has been designated as CAP (Caring About People) Day for Alex Landwehr. Alex is an eighth grade student who has been battling cancer for three years. If students would like to wear a hat for the day on May 8 they need to pay a minimum of $1. All donations will go the Alex's family. This is a secret fundraiser for Alex and his family. If you would like to know more about Alex's journey, please go to the Caring Bridge website: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/prayforalex/createorsignin
