I Love to Read Month Activities
Student Reading BINGO Card - Readers will be encouraged to complete various activities on their BINGO cards. When a bingo is achieved they will turn in their sheets TO YOU for a small prize(we will distribute prizes to each classroom). Parent signatures will be required. After they get the prize from you have them bring their sheet to the Office and drop it in the BINGO box for a chance to win the PRINCIPAL’S CHAIR for a day. We will draw a new name each day and the winner will be announced on WAEL (or at JumpStart). BINGO sheets will be made available on Febraury 2nd..
Photo Contest - Students will be encouraged to participate in a photo contest. Rule sheets will be in your made availble on February 2nd.
Stop-Drop and Read - On Feb. 6(Fri.), Feb. 12(Thurs.), Feb. 20(Fri.) and Feb. 27 (Fri.) we will make an announcement to Stop-Drop and Read. All students should stop what they are doing and read a book for 15 minutes. Students should carry a book with them at all times (even to Specialists) so they are prepared to read!
Locker Lottery - During the Book Fair I will put a note on a students locker or mailbox letting them know they won a free book from the book fair!
Give the Gift of Reading - There will be one book in 12 different gift bags that will be traveling around our school beginning February 9. We will have 2 different sets of bags... one set will only be exchanged with K-2 teachers and the other will travel among grades 3-5. When you get a bag, please read the story to your class and then think of a way to introduce the book another classroom. Record your introduction on a piece of paper, drop it in the bag and pass it on to another class. The new class should read the note, share the book, make a new note and keep passing it on.
Caught Reading - We will take photos of staff reading a book (with only their eyes showing) and classrooms need to guess the reader. We will show them at the end our WAEL broadcast the last week of Feb., post the photos outside Deanna’s office, and announce the mystery person at the end of the day.
Community outreach - You will have an opportunity to have SCSU athletes come and read in your classroom on February 3rd or 4th. .
Wild Country 99 will be sending one of their radio personalities to read to the kindergarten and first graders on February 18th.
Reading Celebration - On Monday, March 2 from 1:30 - 1:50 classrooms are invited for an all school read-a-thon in the gym to celebrate our month of reading! (It is also Dr. Seuss’ birthday which is Read Across America day).
Enjoy several great books!

Great News!
Please let your kids know that the next AR reward party will be on Friday, March 13th. We will be taking them skating at the Natoinal Hockey Center. We will load the busses at 8:00 and skate from 8:30 - 9:30. Students will need to bring their own skates if possible because the Hockey Center has a limited supply of rental skates.

Inventor's Congress
Dear Parents,
You are welcome to attend our Inventor's Congress this Friday, January 23, from 9:30 - 11:30 AM or from 1 PM - 1:45PM. All fourth grade students will be in the gym with their projects. You may certainly meet with your child and walk around the gym and view the other creative inventions. Also, feel free to take a moment and say "hello" to Mr. Krupa. My suggestion would be to come in the afternoon, so you could spend time with your child and then leave together some where near the end of the day. This option gives your child plenty of time to gather their invention and poster board and place it safely in your vehicle.
Thanks for all of your help with your child's invention, log, and poster board. The kids are excited to present their ideas to the class.
Enjoy the warming trend,
Mr. Krupa
P.S. The spelling test that was scheduled for last Friday has been reschedule to this Thursday. Also, the weekly fluency practice pages entitled, "How Big is a Foot?" will also be due on Thursday. There will not be a new fluency assignment for this week. Continue to practice memorizing your poems.

Question About Invention
Question: We are wondering if the students are supposed to bring their Invention Boards to school on Monday. Thanks for your help.
Answer: The kids may bring their invention boards in on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and work on them. They may take them home Thursday afternoon to make final additions/corrections and return them on January 2Oth. Everything is due on January 2Oth. On January 20th, we will practice our presentations. On January 21st and January 22nd, the students will present their presentations to the class and the teacher. I will grade their presentations, logs, inventions, and poster boards during the presentations, along with adding additional points for their presentations/discussions/behavior during the January 23rd Inventor's Congress Event. Thanks for the question.... any other questions????
The goal for Monday, January 12th is to have all three rough draft paragraphs returned so we can type them to perfection during our keyboarding class. The kids can place these paragraphs on their display boards on Tuesday and begin creating their diagrams and adding the diagrams to their poster boards on Wednesday and Thursday.

Example - Invention Paragraphs
Purpose
The reason I chose to invent the “ Christmas LIght Keeper” was because I was getting frustrated with the Christmas LIghts. It was a week before Christmas and we had just got our tree. I had to get the lights untangled. I was getting so frustrated with the lights that I just had to quit. Then, I got the idea of inventing something to keep the lights from tangling. So then I discussed it with my mother and she said, “Okay”! So I then named it the “Christmas Light Keeper”. The purpose of my “Christmas LIght Keeper” is to save time, frustration, and money.
Improvement
My “Christmas Light Keeper” will improve life by saving families lots of time during a very important time of the year. You no longer have to get frustrated with untangling your lights. Putting your Christmas tree and lights up will be a lot more fun. “The Christmas Light Keeper” also improves life during the Christmas season because you will save more money on your lights since you no longer have to throw the old one away and buy new lights. That way you will have more money to spend in other ways.

January Contract Begins On January 7th

All of the grid activities can be completed at school this month. This opportunity is being made available because I know how much time and energy you will be spending on completing your inventions at home.
