Homework for tonight...

...our last MAP's test is tomorrow morning....Good luck! Ask your child how they fared on today's Reading MAP's test.
No Spelling test this week...the MAP's test took too long and overlapped our Language period. The kids did a wonderful job of rereading the questions and making sure they understood the what was being asked of them before they moved on. Consequently, we ran over into our Spelling time and did not get to take the pretest on Tuesday or Wednesday. Enjoy the break from studying spelling words!

Coming Soon to Sauk Rapids-Rice School District: One District, One Book!

Imagine inspiring an entire community of school families to read the same book - a chapter book! - at the same time. Picture those families reading the book at home, students discussing the book at school, parents discussing the book on the playground or parking lot or grocery store. Envision an entire community embracing the same book - the conversation spreading from students and teachers and parents to include other members of the community - even custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria personnel. Anticipate, from that simple premise, said families acquiring the habit of reading aloud together on a regular basis.

If you can imagine all that, then have we got a program for you...It ís called One District, One Book and the program kicks off on January 27th in Sauk Rapids-Rice!

All K-8 families in the district will come home from school on Jan. 27th with the book "The Cricket in Times Square" by George Selden along with the reading calendar for the month and their first edition of "Cricket News". The "Cricket News" will include information for the week about the book, vocabulary, and even some fun at home activities you can do as a family. There will also be some information regarding some Community Family Night Events that will be held three times during the month. Please check out the One District, One Book website @ http://www.isd47.org/arndtlau/ODOB for all the information you will need for the month plus more!

We hope you join us in this Literacy journey with your family!!

Big Brothers/ Big SIsters

[Image]Happy 2012![Image]

I hope the new year is off to a great start for you!!  I am emailing to let you know about some exciting news here at Big Brothers Big Sisters.  We have recently been awarded a contract/grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and our national office to serve 70 children who have a parent/guardian in the military. Of those seventy, forty-five need to be matched in our School-Based/Site-Based Program and twenty-five in Community-Based Program.  All mentors matched with these children need to be 18 years and older and we need to make all 70 matches between the months of January 1st and March 31st, 2012.
We definitely have our work cut out for us but we are confident we can do this with your help.  I would really appreciate it if you could spread the word at your school regarding our need for referrals for children who have a parent/guardian in the military (only 10 percent have to be actively deployed).  This grant does serve children ages 9 -14  (the reason for this is because we aren't able to collect data from children under the age of 9).  We would really appreciate it if referrals could be for children 9 and older but in the case of siblings (who are under 9) it is ok to refer them as well.

Please find attached our referral form, a flyer to help recruit military children and a press release announcing this award.

Along with the need for children we also have a need for mentors.  We would really appreciate your help in identifying anyone who you think may be a great mentor and telling them about our organization or maybe you yourself have thought about becoming a Big.  We have several different volunteer opportunities.  You can volunteer as a Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple, Big Grandparent or a Big Family.  As of January 1st, we have launched our 50-50 campaign to recruit more mentors.  Please find attached a press release announcing the launch of this campaign and a flier.

Anyone is interested in applying can do so by going to our website [ http://www.bbbbscentralmn.org ]www.bbbscentralmn.org or calling Shannon at [ tel:%28320%29%20258-4536 ](320) 258-4536. Anyone who applies to be a Big in January and is accepted will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card to Anton's Restaurant.

Thank you in advance for your help in spreading the word about these great opportunities and I look forward to working with you in 2012!  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Dear Parent / Guardian,

As the New Year begins, I want to take a moment to make sure that each of us knows our after school routine/plans. It seems that there have been a few students in other rooms that have attempted to make changes without the proper verification and this has caused some confusion and delays. My understanding is that in each of these situations, changes in routines had occurred and that information was not conveyed to all of the participating parties. So, I’m asking that each of you review your after school routine with your child and send a list of that information back to me. Again, I just want to make sure that those of us in our room are not confused on where to go and where to be located at the end of the day. Please recall that if changes are necessary, the school needs a written note indicating a change in the daily routine. Hopefully, reviewing this plan with your child and their teacher will avoid any possible confusion in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this form!

edit your child's rough draft tonight, so they are ready to type on Wednesday. Tomorrow, we will review the Improvement paragraph and type it up on Thursday. Thursday, we will review the How To paragraph and type it up on Friday. The idea is that we will be done with the paragraphs on Friday afternoon, so the children may take them home and add them to their boards over the weekend. Hopefully, the invention is done or very close to being done.
Dear Parent Letter - Spelling
Practice spelling list
Go over the January Contract - Sign and return it by Friday - Only five tasks due this month as it is a busy month dedicated to presenting our inventions.

More useful information....

Our second Math MAP's test will be administered next Monday.....I know you'll do well!

Good questions to ask your child....

when is the due date for the Invention, Log, and poster board? Answer: Jan. 11th

Reminder.... each of the three paragraphs for the display board should be a minimum of five sentences. Here is an example to refer to while you are putting your Purpose paragraph together.

Purpose

The purpose of my (name of invention) is to help babies keep their blanket with them at all times. The two loops in the belt make it easy for babies to keep thier favorite blanket and sippy cup with them at all times. As you know, a baby can get very cranky if they don't have their security blanket nearby, so it's important to assist them in keeping this valuable item so close as possible. Also, by keeping the blanket off the floor it helps to prevent germs from getting on the blanket and in the sippy cup. In addition, the ( name of invention) keeps the sippy cup from getting stepped on or tripping someone. Your baby will be happier and healthier with the (name of invention)!

And finally..... our January Contract was sent home today, be watching for it!

Reading Contract
For January

I, _________________________ will read at home everyday and keep a log of my daily reading minutes in my agenda. My goal is to read ________________ (a minimum of 380) minutes for the month of January.

My parent(s) will check my reading minutes and sign my agenda at the end of each day (recommended), week, or month. I will return my agenda to school daily so my teacher can check it. My reading minutes must be validated and verified, by the end of the contract date, with a parent signature to qualify as a completed contract.

I will need to complete a minimum of five items on the January Reading Grid (bold items are mandatory) and continue to work toward my second trimester goal of earning 12 AR points at a minimum of a 60% accuracy rate.

In addition, I will challenge myself by setting two New Year Resolutions for the month of January. Both of these New Year Resolutions will be written at the top of my agenda. One will be an item for me to complete at home and one will be an item that I can work on at school. These will represent our Home to School Connection goals, just like MTB, ANDI, etc. My first New Year Resolution to be completed at home

is to________________________________________________ and my second New

Year Resolution is

to__________________________________________________________at school. I am suggesting that one of your New Year’s Resolutions be to work on division facts with remainders and creating real world word problems involving time. An example would be as follows: I woke up at 6:15 AM and got on the bus 55 minutes later. Then rode on the bus for 15 minutes. What time did I arrive at school? Answer: 7:25 AM

Finally, I will bring in my completed invention, log, and poster board to school by January 11th and share my presentation with my classmates.

This month’s reward activity is an oceanography movie on February 1st.
